Liechtenstein

On our way to Liechtenstein, we made a detour into Germany to visit the Neuschwanstein Castle. This Bavarian castle was one of several built by King Ludwig II. It has a long and interesting history, and in modern times, was the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland.

Our guide, Stephen, had an engaging way of telling us stories about the history of the families and castles in this part of Germany. Early in our hike, he had us walk out onto the Marienbruke Bridge to take in the view of the Neuschwanstein Castle from afar.

At the next stop, he told a story about a dragon who had been banished, but eventually returned once the kings of the area had all died off. The dragon hid gold in the Alpsee Lake, and then lay on top of it, with his wings spread and a golden crown on his head. Then Stephen pointed to the view below. Can you see the dragon?

The “crown” on the dragon’s head is actually Hohenschwangu Castle, the childhood home of Ludwig II. It overlooks the village of Hohenschwangu. (Gesundheit!)

Eventually we made it to the Neuschwanstein Castle exterior, and took a couple of photos.

Stephen had warned us that we were not allowed to take photos inside, and would be sent out of the building if we tried. Sure enough, a young man in our group pulled out his phone and was immediately escorted out by a very stern guard!

The interior was amazing, and I swear we did not take any photos ourselves. But I know a guy…

We then continued our travels to Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein – a country smaller than Rhode Island. Our path took us through Bavarian villages and lush, green hills.

We took a walk through the peaceful town, and worked our way up the the Vaduz Castle.

Even on a rainy day, the views were fantastic!

We walked a winding road down to the Red House (est.1338), a Vaduz landmark, and its lovely vineyard.

We wandered, and eventually found our way back to our hotel.

There, we enjoyed the view from our balcony.

Our time in Europe was quickly drawing to a close, and while the weather had deteriorated, our enthusiasm had not! On to Switzerland!
