The Netherlands

Our springtime adventure was winding down, but there was still time to visit several more towns in the Netherlands.

We visited The Hague with River and Felix. Our first stop was The Bookstor Cafe, for hot drinks in their quiet courtyard.

Then Kathy dragged everyone to the Escher Museum. It was a great way to see the evolution of MC Escher’s talent. His work with reflections, symmetry and tesselations was amazing!

It was a beautiful day to walk through the town and explore shops and galleries in The Passage. The Hague was lovely!

Continuing south the next day, we decided to stop at the Markthal in Rotterdam for lunch. It was a huge building and the painted ceiling inside was impressive.

After lunch, we walked over to see the Cube Houses. They were fascinating, as were some of the other unique-looking buildings in the area.

During our travels, we met someone who suggested we drive through nearby Breda. Our plan to stop there for a quick cappucino turned into wandering the delightful town for a couple of hours.

In Maastricht we walked the attractive streets to find the Helpoort medieval gate to the town. We stopped into the Book Store Dominicanen (located in a medieval church), walked along the Meuse River and enjoyed some wine in Vrijthof square.

Another captivating thing about Maastricht was our stay at Cousins Boutique Hotel. The seven-bedroom hotel is owned by seven cousins whose photos (along with the family dog) are shown throughout the building as part of the decor. There are quirky statues and a record player in each room with a selection of LPs (we played Blondie in our room). It was absolutely charming. Between the lovely town and our fun accomodations we only wished we had planned to stay longer!
