Montmartre
Bonjour! After a year of Kenton’s “unfortunate incarceration” in hospitals, and long recovery at home, we were finally feeling ready for some extended traveling! We flew to Paris and stayed at the lovely Hotel Litteraire Marcel Ayme in the charming neighborhood of Montmartre. We arrived very early, so a Parisian breakfast was in order. We walked enchanting streets and steep staircases to reach Sacre-Couer and … Continue reading Montmartre
Bahamas!
We had the good fortune of joining John & Sheila on “Studio,” their 54 Aquila motor yacht, for a cruise to the Bahamas. Having never done the trip on our own boat, this was an exciting adventure, and great fun! Studio was beautiful, and yes, that is a disco ball! We were delighted that Amanda and Luis were part of our group. Though the rides … Continue reading Bahamas!
Arrivederci Roma!
Two months had gone by so quickly, but what an adventure! We spent the last days of our journey through Europe in Naples and Rome. We stayed in a hotel on the Gulf of Naples, and walked across the street and along the promenade to find lunch in a pretty cafĂ© and to see the Castel dell’Ovo. A long walk took us through more of … Continue reading Arrivederci Roma!
The Amalfi Coast
We crossed to the west coast of Italy and exchanged our car in Salerno for a slightly larger model. Then we headed north to Praiano to meet up with our friends, John and Sheila, for a week on the Amalfi Coast. The four of us moved into a pretty villa, perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the town of … Continue reading The Amalfi Coast
Along the Adriatic
We continued to travel down the east coast of Italy. Our first stop was the Collefrisio Winery for a lovely wine tasting. We picked up a few souvenir bottles. Then we drove south to Vieste, a coastal town overlooking the Adriatic Sea. We entered the city from the lively beachfront. The streets and staircases brought us up to some great views. Evenings by the water … Continue reading Along the Adriatic
San Marino and Sulmona
Heading east across Italy toward the Adriatic Sea, we passed fields of sunflowers and then continued driving up into the Apennine Mountains toward San Marino – the fifth smallest country in the world. As we reached Mount Titano, our cell phones stopped working (apparently the country of San Marino was not covered by our European service), but the car navigation was able to show us … Continue reading San Marino and Sulmona
Montepulciano
We had decided to stay in the center of Montepulciano so we could explore the medieval city as well as take day trips to the surrounding countryside. We dragged our suitcase up winding paths and staircases to reach the Meuble Evoe Hotel, and were greeted by the delightful Angela. We checked in and then took a stroll up to the Piazza Grande to enjoy the … Continue reading Montepulciano
Florence & Siena
Florence and Sienna are similar in size, but they were completely different to experience. We visited these cities back-to-back for two days each, and it was as if we had entered two entirely different worlds. We entered Florence at the Centro Storico (city center), surrounded by beautiful shops, restaurants, churches, statues and lively street performers. We dropped our bags at our hotel in nearby Piazza … Continue reading Florence & Siena
Cinque Terre
We were eager to see the five towns of Cinque Terre (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola & Riomaggiore), and to hike the trails that connect these coastal villages. Driving to the coast of Liguria there were many mountains in our path, and that led to many tunnels. Along the way we drove through Rapallo and Pignone. And then we began to head upwards on narrow, winding … Continue reading Cinque Terre
A Couple of Nices in Nice
Encouraged by road signs with our name on it (Who says the French aren’t friendly and welcoming?), we headed toward the Cote d’Azur. We stopped in Cannes for a picnic lunch on a bench by the beach. The coastline is pretty, but the beaches are made of stones, not sand. After lunch, we checked into our hotel in Nice and then walked around the city, … Continue reading A Couple of Nices in Nice
