Stranded!

At last posting, we’d made it to Shady Harbor Marina in New Baltimore, NY. Aaaaand, we’re still here! We were headed to the Erie Canal, but there has been a lot of fog and rainy weather. The rains wash all kinds of debris into the water (branches, grasses, huge logs) which damage boats and interfere with locks in the Erie Canal. So the canal closes … Continue reading Stranded!

New York

We headed north from the Jersey shore eventually reaching New York Harbor. We docked and explored Jersey City by day and took in some impressive sights in the evening. We continued north on the Hudson River the next day, traveling under the George Washington and Verrazzano Bridges; finally reaching Half Moon Bay where we hiked the area around the New Croton Dam. Our next day … Continue reading New York

St. Michaels

We passed the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse as we entered the pretty St. Michaels harbor. We walked the town, stopping at three different wineries -and one distillery- for tastings. At one point, the Chief of Police decided that we might be having too much fun! The downtown area was pleasant to walk. Cars would stop when we needed to cross the street, but the “whistle … Continue reading St. Michaels

Norfolk

We cruised into Norfolk Harbor. In front of our boat, the city waterfront; behind, the naval station. We took a walk around the city and enjoyed a beer and the view from ‘Grain’ a rooftop pub. Noticing the mermaids, I asked Mr. Google; he said that one nickname for Norfolk is “City of Mermaids.” Okay, maybe I had two beers at ‘Grain’! The next morning … Continue reading Norfolk

13 Bridges and a Lock

Memorial Day weekend was spent in Oriental, NC, at River Dunes. The marina had an elegant clubhouse. It was a great place to hang out for the three-day weekend, and we met several fun people who kept coaxing us to move to North Carolina! The property surrounding the marina was lovely for a bike ride on Monday morning. On Tuesday, we continued to venture north. … Continue reading 13 Bridges and a Lock

A Tale of Two Beauforts

It was the best of times… That’s it. Just the best of times in two towns with the same name! In Beaufort, South Carolina, the name is pronounced “BYOO-fert,” (like ‘beautiful’). We were fortunate to dock nose-to-nose with Freedom, a magnificent 104 ft. Trumpy yacht, built in 1926. We then explored Beaufort, a charming waterfront town (with waterside swings!). The local shops don’t offer visitors’ … Continue reading A Tale of Two Beauforts

South Carolina

As we left Georgia, we saw shrimpers, dredges and we passed the remains of the car carrier that had capsized off St. Simons. We moved aside for a cargo ship that literally filled the channel, and passed by the iconic Harbour Town lighthouse on Hilton Head island. More cruising as we made our way to Charleston, where we enjoyed the city’s French Quarter. We continued … Continue reading South Carolina
