A Tale of Two Beauforts

It was the best of times…

That’s it. Just the best of times in two towns with the same name!

In Beaufort, South Carolina, the name is pronounced “BYOO-fert,” (like ‘beautiful’). We were fortunate to dock nose-to-nose with Freedom, a magnificent 104 ft. Trumpy yacht, built in 1926.

We then explored Beaufort, a charming waterfront town (with waterside swings!).

The local shops don’t offer visitors’ guide booklets; they offer Relocation Guides, insisting that one you’ve seen Beaufort, you’ll want to move there.

As we walked, we encountered many beautiful homes and interesting streets.

Several movies have been filmed here, including The Big Chill.

A wonderfully special place, and the best shrimp and grits we’ve ever had! And braised lamb shank, and seared salmon, and oh, the blueberry scones!

Two weeks later, we made our way up the coast to Beaufort, North Carolina. Here, Beaufort is pronounced “BOH-fert,” (like tied with a ‘bow’). Locals were friendly and welcoming. Seeing two strangers walking down the street, they would stop whatever they were doing to ask us if we needed anything!

Historic homes were lovingly cared for, with plaques showing the date they were originally built.

Downtown there were shops, museums, restaurants and galleries. And the nicest public restroom I’ve ever seen!

The harbor was absolutely filled with boats.

We really enjoyed the pretty waterfront.

The evenings were lovely and we visited a fun rooftop bar – more than once!

Both Beauforts were truly terrific places and while visiting them we really did have the best of times!
