We headed north from Detroit and crossed a busy Lake St. Claire.
Then we continued up the St. Claire River, again traveling the line between USA and Canada, until we reached Port Huron.
We walked the waterfront to see the sights and found lunch at a brew pub by the water.
A rainbow greeted us the next morning as we entered Lake Huron.
Our first stop on the lake was Harbor Beach. We walked around the quiet, mostly empty marina.
In the morning we passed fields of windmills and traveled under clouds as we continued north.
Our stop for the night was Presque Isle, where we borrowed bicycles to check out the pretty, but again very quiet area – and both the old and new lighthouses.
A large boat joined us in the marina, and we recognized dock neighbors from Memorial Day weekend in North Carolina! They were moving their current, larger boat back to NC. It was fun to again cross paths and when we said goodbye the next day, it was just “for now.”
We then had a beautiful cruise up to Mackinac Island.
Here we found people! Lots of people! And several were ‘Late Loopers’ like us. We had docktails with a small group, shared stories and got helpful advice.
The island does not allow cars, so our choices for transportation were bicycles or horses.
We rented bikes and had a great time exploring the island. It was perfect weather and we stayed on the island for a couple of fun, beautiful days.
Mackinac Island was the northernmost point of our loop, and our half-way mark from Key West. Next, we’re heading south and taking on Lake Michigan (cue the dramatic music)!
